12/25/2023 0 Comments Trading post find the rabbit![]() We can add the Sumatran striped rabbit to the growing list of species-from sun bears and Sunda pangolins to Malay tapirs and helmeted hornbills-that are benefiting from the work of FFI and our local partners in this extraordinary wildlife haven. Over the years, these crack teams have covered a cumulative distance of over 30,000 kilometers and removed thousands of snares-often detected using information from supportive forest-edge farmers. In that regard, the routine and intelligence-led forest patrols conducted by the Tiger Protection & Conservation Units as part of their anti-poaching activities have a crucial role to play. However, that doesn't preclude it from being caught in snares set for other species as it forages on the forest floor. It is evidently not a frequent victim of hunting or the pet trade, owing to its natural rarity, largely nocturnal habits and, apparently, the unpleasant taste of its meat. Kerinci Seblat National Park appears to be one of the last remaining strongholds of this forest-dependent species. Habitat loss and fragmentation pose by far the most significant threat to the survival of the Sumatran striped rabbit. The two species share many other common characteristics, most notably that their futures are hanging by a thread. Discovered as recently as 1996 and named after the mountain range on the Laos-Vietnam border where it was first found, this species has also been captured on camera by FFI in recent years. Its mainland counterpart and closest surviving relative-from which it is thought to have diverged around eight million years ago-is the Annamite striped rabbit. ![]() It is one of only two species in the Nesolagus genus. The Sumatran striped rabbit is categorized as Data Deficient on the IUCN Red List. This image, captured in 1997, was the first ever photograph of the species in the wild. It seemed very relaxed."'īy a strange quirk of fate, a nocturnal snapshot of a Sumatran striped rabbit (main picture) was recently included in a magazine feature showcasing some of FFI's historical camera-trapping successes, not only in Sumatra but across the globe. Credit: KSNPįor Herizal, a community ranger with one of the Tiger Protection & Conservation Units and a member of the release team, this was the first time he had seen a striped rabbit despite more than eight years of patrolling deep in the national park: "It's always good to release animals back into the wild-and this was much less stressful than releasing a tiger! We let it go and it looked around-and then started eating leaves. It had a slight injury to its flank-possibly sustained during the flash flood-but has now been safely released back into the forest by the park rangers, at a site chosen on the basis of existing camera trap data. It is understood that the rabbit was captured opportunistically by a local farmer who encountered it at the edge of the national park next to a river that had just flooded violently. The only specimens from Sumatra date back to the Dutch colonial period-and are in the Netherlands, not Indonesia." She is in no doubt about the enormous scientific significance of this unexpected opportunity to eyeball such an elusive species: "Very little is known about this animal, other than that it shows a marked preference for mossy hill and submontane forest. People so often forget this park also protects rare species like the Sumatran striped rabbit and its habitat we have the highest peat swamp forests in Asia, for instance-and amazing moss forests."įFI's Deborah Martyr, who advises the park's Tiger Protection & Conservation Units, is one of the few people fortunate enough to have experienced a close encounter with a Sumatran striped rabbit in the wild. Finding one flaunted on Facebook is the Indonesian equivalent of stumbling upon a thylacine in a Tasmanian pet shop, and the conservation community was quick to respond.Īfter receiving a tip-off about the Facebook post, Fauna & Flora International (FFI) and the Kerinci Seblat National Park authorities quickly tracked down the would-be seller and rescued the priceless rabbit, which was held in safe custody until it was ready to be released.ĭirector of the national park, Tamen Sitorus, said: "While Kerinci Seblat is world famous for its biodiversity, it is the larger charismatic animals like tigers, elephants and helmeted hornbills that usually make the headlines. Known only from a dozen Dutch museum specimens collected in the early 20th century, plus an occasional sighting in the wild and a handful of camera trap images, the species is widely considered to be the rarest rabbit in the world. Sumatran striped rabbits are seldom spotted, in either sense of the word. 12/24/2023 0 Comments How to install exe file on macExcel: a spreadsheet with calculation, graphing tools, pivot tables, and a macro programming language called Visual Basic for Applications.Word: a word processor with rudimentary desktop publishing capabilities. It includes Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, OneNote, OneDrive, and Skype. Components of Microsoft Office for Mac 2016 Since the version 15.25, Microsoft Office for Mac has become exclusively a 64-bit application, breaking compatibility with old Mac computers with 32-bit processors. Today, there’s very little difference between Microsoft Office for Mac and Microsoft Office for Windows. It also included Microsoft PowerPoint 98, Microsoft Word 98, and Microsoft Excel 98. It was re-engineered by Microsoft’s Macintosh Business Unit and introduced the Internet Explorer 4.0 browser and Outlook Express. The first Mac version, called Microsoft Office 98 Macintosh Edition, wasn’t released until, you’ve guessed it, 1998. Microsoft Office was first released in 1990 for Windows 95. The question on many Mac users’ lips seems to be, “Should I pay for Microsoft Office for Mac or use one of its many free alternatives?” In this article, we attempt to answer this question and give you all the information you need to download, install, and start using Microsoft Office for Mac - if you decide that it’s a good choice for you. Mac users with older system software can try Pacifist which performs a similar ability to dig around in PKG files if interested.Microsoft Office is the most popular suite of productivity applications in the world, and it runs on Mac computers just as well as it does on Windows machines. Suspicious Package requires a relatively modern version of macOS or Mac OS X to use. More advanced Mac users can still extract pkg files with pkgutil without actually installing them but it requires the use of the command line, and the Show Files method to see what files are going to be installed and where to is not always available or detailed enough. Longtime Mac users may recall that a package inspection feature used to exist in Mac OS X some time ago via the right-click menu, but that feature has since been removed. Where Suspicious Package really gets useful is in more advanced situations where higher Mac security is necessary and where users want to be sure a file is trusted and an installer isn’t doing anything sketchy when it’s run. If you’re downloading all of your apps, updates, and packages from or an equally trustworthy location, you may find Suspicious Package to be interesting but not particularly noteworthy since the source is trusted, though even packages from Apple can encounter weirdness like having a pkg get stuck on Verifying which can sometimes be troubleshooted through a utility like this. While all of this is informative to any and all users, it’s really intended for advanced users who encounter package files from dubious sources or that are otherwise questionable. The final tab shows the scripts that will be run, “post install” which are often cleanup bash scripts that adjust permissions or perform a cleanup duty: The “All Files” view shows you exactly what files are going to arrive from the package file and where they are going to go, including permissions for specific files: The first is “Package Info” which shows an overview including how many items will be installed, the size of the installation, the developer ID and if it is signed (if applicable) and valid or expired, how many installation scripts are run, and where and when it was downloaded: Within Suspicious Package, you’ll see three primary tabs which detail all sorts of information about the package file. Once Suspicious Package is installed, you can give it a try by dragging any PKG installer file into the application, or selecting a package installer in the Finder and hitting Command+Spacebar to activate Quick Look on the package in question. Get Suspicious Package free from the developer (for macOS and Mac OS X).If any of this sounds interesting to you, you’ll want to download and install the application, which includes a Quick Look plugin: pkg files on a Mac is not particularly complicated though it’s obviously most appropriate for advanced users who will have a general idea of what they’re looking at and what to make of it. Using Suspicious Package to open and inspect. This is where the amusingly named ‘Suspicious Package’ application comes in to play, it’s a free Mac app which allows the opening and inspection of PKG installer files before the installation is actually executed, giving you a look at what is going to happen when the PKG is run. 12/24/2023 0 Comments Deep purple hushHush blasted out of speakers in the summer of 1968. It might be difficult to design a screen from scratch. This will help with linking the screens later. You can change the name of each artboard to reflect its purpose, just so things stay organized. Common screen ideas include a menu screen, home screen, settings screen, feeds, etc. Once you feel comfortable adding photos and text, get to work designing the other screens for your app. To add a photo, simply drag it into the XD screen. The text tool, artboard tool, shape tools, and pen tool is the same as in Illustrator or InDesign. The XD menu is fairly limited, so it’s easy to find the tool you need. Either way, it’s a nice project for learning how to add photos and text to a screen, which will make the next few steps easier. Now, for the designing! For this tutorial, I decided to make a fake app for a travel-themed blog called “Adventure Em.” Most apps don’t actually include a landing page, but sometimes you will see something like this when you open the app. We will use the “prototype” window in step three to link our screens together. ![]() To build your screens, edit the designs, and add more screens, stay in the design window. (If you’re skilled with other Adobe software, you might find it easy to catch on!) XD has two main windows: design and prototype. If you’ve never used Adobe XD, it might be helpful to start by making something simple just to get familiar with the tools. This creates a very realistic portrayal of how an app will truly work, and it’s easier than you might think! This tutorial will serve as a brief introduction to Adobe XD, but you can find a full list of tutorials here. It not only allows for designers to create screens of the app, but also has functions to connect certain screens so that clicking on buttons can actually bring a user from screen to screen. This is known as “front-end” UI design, and it is a great way for designers to show developers how they might want an app to look.Īdobe XD is an easy-to-use tool that can help a designer create this mockup. To create an app mockup, you don’t need to know how to code any of the app screens-you just need to be able to design what they might look like. The designers create an app mockup to show the developers what they want the app to look like, and then the developers build and code it into creation.Ī mockup is a fake version of an app that can help people understand how it would look and work if it existed.
